Tottenham, Aberdeen, Hibs, TNS, Larne & Linfield await Europa League playoffs draw
Tottenham Hotspur is one of six English teams awaiting the first draw of the Europa League playoffs.
The north London club entered the final qualifying round after finishing seventh in the Premier League.
Will be drawn with Aberdeen, Hibernian, New Saints, Larne and Linfield and all must pass the third qualifying round first.
Occurred at 12:30 BST on Monday.
The playoffs to determine who enters the group stage will be played in two rounds on August 19 and 26.
What is it?
Following the announcement of the Europa League playoffs as part of UEFA’s reorganization in December 2018, there will be three European men’s football club matches for the first time in more than 20 years.
The Champions League has not been affected by the new competition, but the Europa League group stage matches will be reduced from 48 teams to 32. There will be an additional playoff match between the group stage and the last 16 teams.
Therefore, the new competition will feature teams that will enter the Europa League in the knockout, first and second qualifying rounds. There will be matches on Thursday with the Europa League, with the final taking place in Tirana, Albania, on May 25. Winners will be able to participate in the Europa League next season, provided they do not qualify for the UEFA Champions League through national competitions.
Who else is in Europa League playoffs?
The new three-tier European league aims to bring more group soccer to smaller countries. At least 34 countries are represented, while only 26 are currently represented.
Therefore, only four clubs in the new tournament will come from the top league, and the League of Berlin, Rome and Rennes will join Spurs in the final qualifying round.
Since Spurs and Roma are the seed of the playoff draw, they will not be able to meet, which means that new Roma manager José Mourinho will not return to his old club anytime soon.
The Scottish teams Celtics and St Johnstone can participate if they lose the next Europa League qualifier.
No team will automatically qualify for the group stage. The group stage will be drawn on August 27 and will be held from September to December.
Other teams include the Bohemians, Clover and Dundalk of the Republic of Ireland, as well as Anderlecht and Basel, who must first pass the third round of qualifying knockouts.
teams that qualify for the third round of the qualifying round will be drawn together with the teams eliminated in the third round of the UEFA Europa League.
