Amazing Benzema to return to the National team. According to French source L’Equipe, Karim Benzema could set to return to the France national squad.
Following a blackmail issue involving former Real Madrid teammate Mathieu Valbuena, the Real Madrid player has not represented his country since 2015.
As a result, he forces to withdraw from Euro 2016 and the 2018 World Cup. France won the latter after hosting the former and reaching the final.
Before the incident, he had made 81 appearances for Les Bleus, scoring 27 goals in the process. Including three at the 2014 World Cup.
And now, over six years later, he could be in line for a comeback, with L’Equipe stating that head coach Didier Deschamps is actively considering recalling the 33-year-old.
Over the last three seasons, Benzema has been in superb form. Since Cristiano Ronaldo’s departure, he has been the main man at the Bernabeu Stadium, scoring 86 goals in 146 games across all competitions.
France’s other Strikers
France hasn’t had much of a problem without Benzema. They’ve won one and finished second in the other of the two tournaments they’ve entered since his exclusion.
This summer, they’re among the favorites to add another title to their catalog. Simply told, they are one of the world’s top national teams.
However, if you had to choose one flaw in their lineup, it would be their forward selection. In Russia, Olivier Giroud was the major man. And, even though it wasn’t his duty to score goals, he returned from the competition without making a single attempt on goal.
Both Kylian Mbappe and Antoine Griezmann can play upfront, but they have excelled in various positions at international events.
As a right-winger, Mbappe was named Young Player of the Tournament in 2018. While Griezmann named Golden Boot and Player of the Tournament in 2016 while playing behind Giroud.
Deschamps may go for Anthony Martial if he prefers a younger, more mobile option. However, the Manchester United striker enters the tournament in poor form, scoring just seven goals in all competitions.
Although Alexandre Lacazette has mentioned, he has not played for France since 2017 and has never competed in a competition.
Meanwhile, Marcus Thuram was called up for the first time in November but has only played three times for the national team, so he is unlikely to be their first option.
Wissam Ben Yedder of Monaco is likely the best alternative. In recent years, the 30-year-old has been a standout in Ligue 1, collecting the Golden Boot last season and striking another 20 this season.
On the other hand, Benzema is the clear choice for Deschamps if he wants a player who can both score goals and provide superb link-up play. France will be the squad to beat at Euro 2020 if the rumors are accurate. Amazing Benzema to return to the National team.
