Barcelona lose points in the Liga Barcelona’s hopes of winning LaLiga have been severely harmed after they twice squandered leads in a six-goal thriller at Levante.
Scorers: Melero 57′, Morales 59′, Leon 83′; Messi 25′, Pedri 34′, Dembélé 64′
First Half for Barca
Lionel Messi scored the game’s first goal with a crisp volley into the bottom corner halfway through the first half.
Pedri finished off a smooth pass involving Messi and Ousmane Dembélé to make it 2-0.
Early in the second half, however, the hosts equalized when Gonzalo Melero met José Luis Morales’ cross with a strong header past Marc-André ter Stegen.
Levante shocked Barça with an equalizer as scorer turned provider when Morales drilled a shot into the far corner just two minutes later.
When Antoine Griezmann’s turn on the edge of the box rolled into Dembélé’s lane, the Frenchman rifled an effort into the top corner to put Barça back in front, 3-2.
Second Half for Levante
But the action didn’t end there, as Sergio Leon scored at Ter Stegen’s close post in the dying minutes to tie the game at 3-3.
After 36 games, Ronald Koeman’s side is in second place with 76 points. Atlético Madrid (77 points), Real Madrid (75), and Sevilla (71) are all tied for first place with one game remaining.
Meanwhile, Levante has advanced to the 13th round.
Barcelona traveled to Valencia to play Levante after a soulless game at Camp Nou on Saturday. The visitors were afraid, and the game ended in a tie. Sergi Roberto, who came on in the second half to replace an injured Ronald Araujo, had a terrible first half and nearly cost his team the game.
After registering an assist earlier in the game, Dembélé figured he had scored the winner to put his team in the driving seat for the La Liga crown. In the end, Barcelona drew due to individual errors for the second time.
Barcelona Miss La Liga Race
Levante offered little in the first half, but when Roberto came on, he exploited Roberto’s flaws. The three goals could have been easily avoided. After some suspicious defending on the left by the tourists, Gonzalo Melero scored a header. José Luis Morales scored a spectacular volley, and Sergio León equalized with a near-post finish in the dying minutes.
Barça had a lot of attacks, but they missed a lot of opportunities. Even though the latter two scored, Frenkie de Jong, Pedri, and Lionel Messi all missed obvious chances. Dembélé capped off an excellent display at the right-wing back with a beautiful goal.
It is, in the end, the last straw. In any circumstances, Barcelona cannot concede two goals in a row, as they did today. Furthermore, they are incapable of recognizing a late equalizer such as the one Levante scored tonight.
In a tight title battle, individual errors by the veterans (Gerard Piqué, Sergi Roberto, and Marc-André Ter Stegen) cost the team in pink two points. The Catalans should kiss La Liga goodbye after their second-half performance was truly embarrassing. Barcelona lose points in the Liga
