All you need to know about Ramon Planes, the new Barcelona sporting director


Who is Ramon planes ?

He is Ramon Planes Novo, who held the position of sports administration in a number of football clubs,

and in his last position was assistant to the Barcelona Football Department, headed by Eric Abidal.

Planes is 53 years old, he was born in Lleida in Spain on November 5, 1967,

and he has a history of playing football in Spanish clubs as a player and coach.

In his hometown club UE Lleida, Spain’s submerged club, Blanes fought all the challenges as a player and coach,

before taking on the position of Sporting Director of Hospitalet Club for 4 years between 1999 and 2003,

the same position he held for two years between 2003 and 2005 in Racing Santaner,

then Deportivo Alaves in 2005 Before returning to Lleida in 2006 to 2007,

then he became a technical secretary at Espanyol before taking over the sports administration in May 2009.

Planes stayed at Espanyol until November 2012, before going into another experience two years later,


namely the 2014-2015 season in Tottenham, during which he served as the sports technical secretary,

and in 2015 he became the sports director of the Spanish club Ilici before he resigned due to the fact that the club management did not have sufficient independence in Light investment company’s acquisition of a large part of the club’s shares.

In June 2016, after leaving Elecce, Blanes signed a two-year contract with Rayo Vallecano to become his sporting director following the departure of Felipe Minambres.

Then in 2017, he became the sporting director of Getafe, succeeding Tony Muñoz. On a personal life level, Blanes is married to Spanish ballet player Beto Foster, world champion in 1991, and they have 3 children.

Planes’s main challenge will be satisfying the locker room, whose relationship was tense with Abidal,

who was his assistant before the Frenchman was sacked due to the heavy 8-2 defeat of Bayern Munich in the Champions League quarter-finals.
