Lionel Messi leads Argentina squad for next October 2022 World Cup qualifiers.
The Argentine Football Federation announced On Friday that its national team will play South American qualifiers for the 2022 Qatar World Cup with Barcelona star Lionel Messi but without Paris Saint-Germain’s French winger Angel Di Maria and injured Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero.
The first and second rounds of south America’s 2022 World Cup qualifiers, scheduled for March,
have been suspended for a long time, due to the emerging CORONA virus,
which continues to spread in South America and some European countries.
The Tango team begins its qualifying campaign at la Pomponera in Buenos Aires,
the stronghold of Boca Juniors, against Ecuador on October 8th,
before taking on a guest five days later, on 13 Thaboon, against the Bolivian counterpart in La Paz at an altitude of 3,500 meters above sea level.
Messi returns to his country after a disappointing season at all levels with Barcelona,
in which he came out of the Champions League with a humiliating 2/8 loss to Bayern Munich,
and did not retain the La Liga title, in addition to his desire to leave Catalonia before deciding to stay.
The South American Football Federation (Conmebol) allowed Messi to participate with his country’s national team after it had previously been suspended for being expelled from the third-place match against Chile in the Copa América competition organized by Brazil in 2019,
before deciding to lift the suspension and cancel the penalty for more than a year on the event
and the fact that the qualifiers were postponed due to the outbreak of the “Covid-19” pandemic.
Aguero is absent due to injury, although the City striker suffered a knee injury at the end of last season
and did not participate in the team’s group training at the beginning of the current season.
The uncertainty is that Di Maria, who returned to wear the Paris club’s shirt after a period of suspension following a coronavirus,
helped Saint-Germain achieve their first league victory of the season at the expense of Metz 1-0 after two losses.
Besides Messi, coach Lionel Scaloni has called up a constellation of stars such as Juventus striker Paolo Dybala and Inter striker Lautaro Martínez,
in a squad that is not final, as it will be complemented by the recall of players playing in the local championship.
The list was as follows:
Goalkeepers: Emiliano Martínez, Juan Mousso, Agustín Marquezin.
Juan Vois, Renzo Sarabia, Khairman Pizzella, Nicolas Otamendi, Walter Caniman, Leonardo Ballardi, Neuen Pérez, Nicolas Taliavico, Marcos Aconia, Facundo Medina.
